Aspen Saturday Market

We were visiting for the weekend, so we walked through the market to get some breakfast pastries, and ended up with some delicious foraged jellies and some whiskey!

One of the pleasures of summer in Aspen is the Saturday farmers' market. I still dream about those only-grown-in-Colorado specialty tomatoes I paid a fortune for 2 years ago. (But they were worth it!) Local vendors show up in force from early June to mid-September and line the streets from 8:30 am -1 pm for this event. Every time I go I get the feeling I'm at a football game waiting to start. There's this excitement in the air. The attendees really, really enjoy looking at all the gorgeous produce and breads. Do not leave without purchasing some of the Colorado Mountain honey. It is the tastiest treat this side of well, Utah. Something about the mountain clover that gives it its distinct taste. I also love the artisanal kombucha that you can still buy by the drink. Tasting is not possible this year because of the pandemic. But in years past it was fun sampling before purchase. LIke most farmers' markets, the price per is higher, sometimes significantly higher, than what you would pay at City Market, the grocery store three blocks away. But to me the quality and care of the goods are worth the price. Being a city girl, I didn't realize Colorado had so many farms. I learned lots talking with the local farmers and ranchers. The mountain air and the glorious peaks surrounding the market just make everything look better!

I have been visiting the Aspen Saturday Market for several years now (I own property in downtown Aspen). For those who haven't yet been, the Aspen Saturday Market runs Saturday mornings from June 12 to October 9. It is the ultimate local's activity to stroll like a flaneur through the open air farmers market, with vendors ranging from artisanal produce to handmade goods. The weather is usually stunningly beautiful and you have Aspen Mountain as your backdrop. This year (2021) I visited the Opening Day (June 12th, 2021) and that is where these pictures and videos are from. Last year during the pandemic, the Aspen Saturday Market was open, but only 50 partisans were allowed at any time and traffic was one way, masks required. It was a warm reminder to see Aspen getting back to normal and local entrepreneurs selling their wares to a hungry-for-local products crowd!

Loved this market! Open at 8:30am to 2pm in summer. Popcorn is quite popular and we've got medium size but it was huge! Patisry, honey, local food and veggies, accessories and etc. We loved handmade jewelry and gifts that we can find at the market:-)
